Yala national park is being the most famous and second largest wildlife sanctuary in Sri Lanka. Also, Yala national park is best known for its variety of wild animals. The ideal time for Yala national park safari is 5:30 am to 8:30 am during the morning time or 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm in the afternoon.
Yala national park located in the southeast region of the country and lies at the edge of the southern province and the beginning of the eastern province. An area of 979 square kilometers belongs to the park and situated within about 300 kilometers from Colombo. Actually, this wildlife sanctuary holds five blocks out of which two are now open to the public.
Yala consists of 125 species of birds, some migratory and 32 species of mammals with a large density of Leopards. Though they are sometimes difficult to spot due to their nocturnal lifestyle. While the Yala national park consists of many water birds that roost and breed here. Further, a large herd of elephants also sustain here, adding immense value and attraction to the park. 215 species of birds have recorded from Yala so far. There are six endemic species such as Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl, Crimson Fronted Barbet, etc. The wetlands and the streams in the park attract a huge variety of water birds including many species of migrants.

Yala national park jeep safari consists of 02 options, one is the morning or afternoon half-day jeep safari while the other one is a full day jeep safari inside the national park. A half day jeep safari will start at 06:00 am in the morning and 02:30 pm for the afternoon safari, also both covering a time period of 03 to 04 hours.
Full day Yala national park safari will start at 05:30 am followed by lunch and ends up by 06:00 pm The 4WD safari jeeps are the only permitted way of observing the Yala national park.
